  • Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries, while strengthening the capabilities of governments and the private sector in those countries to create and sustain high-quality health systems that can succeed without our assistance. For more information, please visit: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org.

CHAI is applying the techniques it has used successfully to improve access to HIV/AIDS and malaria treatment in developing countries to achieve the same increase in access for essential pediatric vaccines. Immunization is widely acknowledged as one of the most cost-effective public health interventions and yet each year an estimated three million children under the age of five lose their lives to vaccine preventable illnesses. The majority of these deaths occur in low-income countries, where poverty and lack of affordability prevent access to life-saving vaccines.

Driven by the belief that all children deserve fair equitable access to the latest life-saving vaccines, CHAI has begun to work with manufacturers and other partners to negotiate price reductions for major vaccines. This work has resulted in a reduction in the price of rotavirus vaccine by two-thirds, a savings of over USD$600M for global donors and governments over five years. Furthermore, a price reduction of 45% was achieved on the Pentavalent vaccine, resulting in savings of more than $150M over 5 years. Efforts on other vaccines are currently underway. The CHAI Global Vaccine Markets program supports this work, with the end goal of achieving affordable, yet commercially sustainable, vaccine prices, thereby increasing value for money and enabling accelerated introduction of new vaccines in developing countries.
