Overview

 

Founded in 2002, by President William J. Clinton and Ira C. Magaziner, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (“CHAI”) is a global health organization committed to saving lives, reducing the burden of disease and strengthening integrated health systems in the developing world.

 

CHAI’s global malaria program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term.

  

Position Overview:

CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with public health experience to conduct data analyses in support of evidence-based decision making within national malaria programs. The Analytics Research Assistant will support countries across East, Central, and West Africa (including Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Rwanda). S/he will be supporting the following types of analytical tasks: conducting literature review related to malaria prevention and control review to inform malaria strategies, conducting data analysis related to malaria epidemiology and case management to inform targeting of interventions such as supportive supervision visits, reviewing surveillance systems and data to identify key bottlenecks and potential solutions. The Research Assistant will also play a key role in identifying opportunities to improve data quality, data collection tools and processes in the malaria analytics and surveillance activities within this region. While the Research Assistant is expected be comfortable working independently, members of the Malaria Analytics and Surveillance Team (MAST) and the Program Support team in the region will support him/her.  The Research Assistant will be based in New York, although there is flexibility to be based elsewhere on the East Coast (USA). S/he will be required to travel within the East, Central, and West Africa region (ECW) approximately 40-50% of the time. As s/he will need to work closely with regional and country-based teams, s/he will need to possess strong communication and organizational skills. S/he will also have a deep personal commitment to producing results. The position will have a duration of 6 months. 

 

This role has flexibility to be based in East or West Africa pending country leadership approval.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Conduct descriptive statistical and epidemiological analyses for all ECW countries (Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia) based on DHIS2 surveillance data and literature review;
  • Conduct literature reviews and analyze qualitative and quantitative data as needed;
  • Clean, organize and merge available data using Excel or statistical software (STATA, SAS, R);
  • Assess the quality and suitability of available data for analysis;
  • Use data analyses to improve programmatic decision-making, such as through creating data quality standard operating procedures and standardizing processes for targeting supportive supervision visits to health providers (e.g., Nigeria and Tanzania);
  • Support development of improved data collection tools and analyses for decision making;
  • Support surveillance strengthening activities including analysis of data and synthesis of findings;
  • Disseminate findings through high-quality presentations, reports, and publications;  and,
  • Any other tasks identified.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Public Health or related field (or currently enrolled in such program) strongly preferred, or Bachelor’s degree minimum with exceptional experience;
  • Proficiency with statistical software (e.g., STATA, SAS, R, or other) to clean, organize and analyze data;
  • High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications;
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work both independently in unstructured settings and as part of a group, often on tight timelines;
  • Ability to be effective in high-pressure situations, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and set priorities;
  • Ability to adapt to new environments;
  • Enthusiasm for applying research methods to solve global health problems; and,
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

 

Advantages:

  • Geospatial analysis programming experience (R, ArcGIS and/or other relevant software);
  • Knowledge of malaria and/or other major global infectious disease problems;
  • Experience living or working in resource-limited countries;
  • Experience working remotely with a decentralized team.
