Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI values diversity and inclusion and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experiences, backgrounds, and culture.

Position Overview

CHAI is seeking an Analyst to provide analytical and technical support to its Cervical Cancer Elimination Programme in South Africa. With support from Unitaid, CHAI is working with the National Department of Health (NDoH) to transition to HPV molecular testing as the primary cervical cancer screening method and to decentralize precancer treatment services to district level, expanding access across 201 sites in all nine provinces. The programme aligns with the World Health Organization's 90-70-90 elimination targets and aims to establish a scalable model to accelerate South Africa's cervical cancer elimination by 2030.

The Analyst will contribute to data analysis, monitoring and evaluation, and technical support activities under the guidance of senior team members, and will support engagements with NDoH, provincial departments of health, and implementing partners. The Analyst will be based in Pretoria, South Africa, and report to the CHAI South Africa Cervical Cancer Programme Manager. This role requires travel within South Africa, as dictated by programmatic needs.

Responsibilities

Data analysis and programme monitoring

  • Conduct data analysis, interpretation, and synthesis of cervical cancer programme data to inform NDoH decision-making, planning, and performance monitoring.
  • Support NDoH with strengthening data systems, reporting tools, dashboards, and cascade tracking for the elimination programme.
  • Support monitoring and evaluation activities, including indicator development, data quality review, and routine programme reporting.

Provincial readiness assessments

  • Support facility-level readiness assessments for cervical cancer service decentralization across provinces, evaluating infrastructure, human resources, equipment, and supply chain readiness.
  • Analyze and synthesize assessment results and prepare summary reports with recommendations for NDoH and CHAI programme planning.
  • Track progress against WHO 90-70-90 elimination targets and support the rollout of assessment tools and findings across additional provinces as required.

Technical and programme support

  • Provide technical inputs for donor reports, presentations, policy briefs, and programme reviews.
  • Document best practices, lessons learned, and implementation insights to support national scale-up.
  • Support tracking of procurement, deployment, and workforce training related to HPV molecular testing devices and other cervical cancer screening equipment.

Stakeholder engagement and internal collaboration

  • Support engagement and coordination with NDoH, provincial departments of health, and other implementing partners.
  • Prepare materials for and support meetings, workshops, and technical working groups with government and partners.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge sharing across CHAI South Africa teams and provide ad hoc technical support as required by CHAI and NdoH.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, epidemiology, economics, health economics, data science, statistics, or a related field.
  • 2–3 years of relevant experience in analytics, research, or technical programme support (including internships, fellowships, or research assistant roles).
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel; comfort working with structured datasets and health information systems (e.g., DHIS2) is an advantage.
  • Ability to develop clear tables, charts, and PowerPoint slides that accurately present analytical findings.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work systematically with data and documentation.
  • Well-written communication skills, with the ability to summarize analysis clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with guidance and supervision.
  • Willingness to travel within South Africa for provincial readiness assessments and stakeholder engagements as needed.
