Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

Role Overview

We are seeking an exceptional Director of Global Talent Management to lead a critical transformation of our people systems and practices across our global organization. This is a rare opportunity to build enterprise-wide talent infrastructure from the ground up, creating frameworks that will shape how we develop, recognize, and retain the 1,700+ staff who drive our mission across 40+ countries.

As a key member of the HR leadership team, the Director will report to the Head of People and serve as both architect and builder—designing strategy while rolling up their sleeves to implement foundational systems. You will supervise a team of 3 staff members focused on compensation, performance enablement, and learning and development. Success in this role requires strong indirect influence, as you will work closely with HR Business Partners and collaborate with CHAI’s programmatic and country leadership to drive adoption of new systems throughout our historically decentralized organization.

This role can be based in any of the CHAI program countries, pending work authorisation and leadership approval.

The Challenge

CHAI has historically operated using a decentralized model, which has fostered innovation and local ownership. However, we have reached an inflection point where the absence of centralized talent systems is creating inequities in how we manage performance, compensation, development, and career progression. This role will lead the charge in establishing consistent, transparent, and equitable talent practices while preserving the entrepreneurial approach and calculated risk-taking that make our culture special. We are building systems that enable excellence and innovation.

Responsibilities

Compensation Framework & Job Architecture Redesign

  • Lead a comprehensive overhaul of CHAI's compensation framework and job architecture — updating these interconnected systems are the top priority for CHAI in 2026
  • Oversee the redesign of compensation structures to reflect current market realities, organizational values, and our commitment to equity across 40+ countries, working with a dedicated compensation team member and external consultants
  • Lead the RFP process to select and manage external consulting partners who will support the technical compensation design work
  • Guide the development of equitable salary bands and transparent compensation philosophy, building on foundational work
  • Direct the update of career frameworks with transparent levelling, competencies, and progression pathways
  • Ensure job families and levels support equitable hiring, promotion, and development decisions across diverse markets
  • Oversee the development of frameworks for merit increases, promotions, and equity adjustments
  • Lead implementation of new job architecture and compensation frameworks across the organization, including designing and executing a comprehensive change management strategy to drive understanding and adoption and building stakeholder buy-in across all levels of the organization

Learning & Development Strategy

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive L&D strategy with emphasis on manager training and performance enablement tools
  • Design scalable learning pathways that work across different roles, levels, and geographies
  • Create measurement frameworks to track learning impact and ensure training drives performance improvements
  • Balance building internal capability with strategic use of external partners when appropriate

Performance Enablement System Development & Adoption

  • Develop and implement CHAI's first ever performance management system, building on initial frameworks to create a comprehensive approach
  • Drive organization-wide adoption of performance enablement practices through targeted change management, including development of communication strategies that build understanding and buy-in across all levels
  • Design systems that work across diverse country contexts while maintaining consistency and supporting our culture of innovation and calculated risk-taking

Strategic Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and key member of the HR leadership team
  • Build buy-in and drive adoption of new systems through strong indirect influence with CHAI’s leadership teams and other key stakeholders across a historically decentralized organization
  • Partner closely with HR Business Partners to ensure regional and functional leaders can effectively implement and sustain talent initiatives
  • Translate performance and talent insights into strategic talent decisions, including talent reviews, succession planning, and workforce planning that become increasingly sophisticated as performance enablement systems mature
  • Champion equity, transparency, and fairness in all talent decisions
  • Develop and manage relationships with external vendors and consultants as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree plus 10+ years of progressive human resources experience, with at least 5 years in senior talent management roles
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and influencing abilities, including working through indirect influence to drive change across matrixed organizations
  • Strategic mindset combined with willingness to execute hands-on work — this is a 'roll up your sleeves' role
  • Experience in compensation philosophy, salary structure design, and global pay equity, including experience leading implementation of new frameworks and managing organizational transitions
  • Experience developing and implementing performance management systems, ideally in organizations of 1,000+ employees
  • Experience managing external consultants and vendors, including RFP processes and consultant partnerships
  • Multi-country experience is essential—experience working across diverse international contexts with understanding of how to balance global consistency with local requirements (US-only experience is insufficient for this role)
  • Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple complex initiatives simultaneously
  • Excellent analytical skills and comfort with data-driven decision-making
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to tailor messaging for diverse audiences

Advantages

  • Experience leading HR transformation initiatives in decentralized organizations
  • Background in international development, non-profit, global health, or mission-driven sectors
  • Deep experience with change management methodologies and frameworks
  • Comfort working in lean, resource-constrained environments where you build systems from the ground up
  • Consulting experience or exposure to HR best practices across multiple organizations
  • Fluency in additional languages beyond English
  • Master's degree in HR, Organizational Development, Business, or related field
