The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.
At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skillsets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

Program overview
CHAI’s Health Systems Strengthening group is building out a new team focused on scaling private finance to deliver sustainable and equitable health services. Private capital represents a major opportunity to grow the pool of financing available for health; however, it needs to be directed to ensure it is used to build equitable health systems. The team will support Governments to develop and execute blended finance transactions and work with private healthcare businesses to scale service delivery in an effort to extend the health impact of the private sector as well as private capital.
The team is currently focused on solar electrification of health facilities at scale through public-private collaboration and blended finance structures, demonstrating a new way of working beyond the traditional project based grant financing approach. Despite hundreds of millions invested by donors in electrifying health facilities across the continent, there have been operational and financial challenges limiting impact. Lack of funding for operations & maintenance has meant that systems often fail long before the end of their lifetime; projects are donor-driven rather than coordinated around a national strategy and tailored to specific health needs; and governments typically lack funding for large-scale deployment. CHAI is working with governments to aggregate large numbers of health facilities into portfolios and structure long-term service agreements underpinned by blended finance structures, to demonstrate a sustainable approach to solar electrification.
Through our solar work, we have supported Governments to develop a new way of working with the private sector to fill financing gaps and improve health outcomes. Going forward, there is a significant opportunity to expand this approach to other areas — from diagnostics to supply chains to digital health — to help governments crowd in private capital and build sustainable, resilient health systems. The team will also work on scaling services of the private health sector to reach underserved or lower income communities which are traditionally overlooked by private investment. In this way, private healthcare service providers across the value chain can complement traditional domestic and donor health systems.
Position Overview
CHAI is seeking an Associate to join the team to support project development and deal structuring of blended finance transactions for health. This role will specifically work on supporting design, preparation, and implementation of solar and other related private capital projects in a number of African countries.
