The Associate Director will play a leading role in driving CHAI’s transformational work by accelerating availability, introduction, uptake, and usage of effective and affordable screening and diagnostic services essential for care and treatment of PLHIV, people at risk or living with Hepatitis, their families, and partners to achieve epidemic control. The goal of this position is to help grow the diagnostics landscape for both HIV and viral Hepatitis.

As a member of CHAI’s Laboratory Support Team (LST), Global HIV Access Program (HAP) and Viral Hepatitis Team, the Associate Director will work in a very close collaboration and partnership with all three teams, reporting to the Program Director for Global LST. The Associate Director will work in this collaboration to set the vision and strategy for the HIV and Hepatitis diagnostics programs and contribute to the strategic vision for LST. They will also work with a variety of teams across CHAI to ensure its successful implementation in support of achieving CHAI’s objectives in HIV and Viral Hepatitis.

The Associate Director must be a highly motivated individual with deep passion and commitment to achieving both programs’ ambitious goals. The candidate must be able to support and advise the development and implementation of multi-country programs in a dynamic and culturally diverse environment. This role will require up to 40% travel to program countries dependent on control over the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 or as soon as safe travel can be assured, and key global stakeholder meetings.


Strategy Development

  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance for the HIV and Viral Hepatitis diagnostics programs, including supporting the development of the vision and priorities for workstreams, and overseeing the development of clear strategic and operational plans for program execution and synergy with the broader LST strategy
  • As a member of the leadership and management team for LST, contribute to the strategy development for diagnostic services for other disease programs by sharing best practices and lessons learned from HIV and Hepatitis programs, as appropriate.

Program Management

  • Provide technical guidance and support for the HIV diagnostic portfolio including HIV testing, early infant diagnosis, viral load monitoring, CD4 testing, TB LAM, and CrAg screening; guide the teams to resolve issues and mitigate risks; and support problem resolution where needed to ensure implementation progress and overall delivery of grant commitments.
  • Provide technical guidance and support for the global and country-specific viral hepatitis diagnostic portfolio, including hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) rapid screening, self/peer testing for HCV, HCV viral load and HBV and HCV antigen testing, and integrated multi-disease diagnostic platforms; guide the teams to resolve issues and mitigate risks; and support problem resolution where needed to ensure implementation progress and overall delivery of grant commitments.
  • Engage with country leadership to provide technical support and strategic guidance, and support market-shaping efforts for diagnostics.
  • When appropriate, represent CHAI’s work on HIV and Viral Hepatitis diagnostics externally at global stakeholder meetings, conferences, and webinars.
  • Support the development and conceptualization of high-impact interventions to translate the results of relevant analyses into actionable plans and changes in policy and operations at the country level.
  • Develop a trusted relationship and dialogue with program leads on other CHAI teams working on HIV and viral hepatitis diagnostics projects to ensure alignment on priorities, strategies, processes, and objectives.
  • Manage and build relationships with various external partners, including UN organizations, donors, implementing partners, technical partners, and suppliers, develop partner engagement strategy, and oversee partner engagement by staff members.
  • Work with technical staff to identify opportunities for evidence generation, and plan and execute evidence generation activities to inform international and national policy related to HIV and viral Hepatitis diagnostics.

Human Resources Management

  • Directly line manage one Analyst supporting the viral hepatitis global team, including providing regular and ongoing technical support and performance management.

Team Support and New Program Development

  • In partnership with Senior Director, HAP, Sr. Director Viral Hepatitis and Director of Programs, LST, set fundraising goals, identify, and develop fundraising opportunities.
  • Support fundraising, including proposal development, for new opportunities where appropriate. Engage in regular HAP and viral hepatitis global team meetings to ensure that diagnostics are appropriately integrated into overall program planning and implementation.
  • Role model the values and mission of CHAI and the behavior norms of the global HAP and viral hepatitis program.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree, plus a minimum of 7 years of relevant professional work experience with increasing levels of responsibility, team management and leadership; preference for candidates with experience in management consulting and global public health at a senior level
  • Knowledge of diagnostic or laboratory services for infectious disease management is a significant plus, but work experience in laboratories is not required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships in a matrixed and multicultural environment; proven expertise at senior-level stakeholder management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to concisely communicate complex ideas in a manner that builds buy-in among diverse stakeholders
  • Experience with new product introduction or Access work in resource limited settings, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and demonstrated experience independently managing complex projects and solving challenging problems in uncertain and evolving environments, often with limited structural or operational support
  • High emotional intelligence, patience, and thoughtfulness even in high-pressure, stressful situations
  • Experience working in a diverse environment and commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity
  • Experience in fundraising for global health projects from major donor organizations
  • Excellent ability to set direction and structure, prioritize among complex options, and uphold high performance expectations
  • High level of proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Willingness to travel up to 40% time internationally


  • Past experience in a management role on CHAI’s country or global team
  • Advanced degree in management, public health, or other relevant fields
